Find out different ways you can maximise the use of your tripod.
So, you need a sturdy tripod for landscape photography? Oh, but now you need a monopod for shooting events or street photography? and, you also need a table-top tripod for vlogging or social media!?
That’s going to be a lot of expensive equipment – and where would you keep it all?
How about one tripod that does all this (and more)? What if your tripod could be configured into multiple positions for multiple uses, rather than having individual pieces of kit which serve a single purpose? Wouldn’t it be useful if your tripod was capable of more? Well, we made just that...
Welcome to our guide on what a 3 Legged Thing tripod can do also known as, Tripod Yoga! (You'll see, just keep reading)
Here’s how to make the most out of your tripod kit positions and when best to use them:
Traditional Tripod Position
This is the most conventional tripod position and one I’m sure you’re all familiar with.
Setting the leg angles to the 23° position gives the most stability and rigidity to the traditional tripod setup.
The legs can be extended or retracted depending on the desired camera angle. Extending the centre column will also provide additional height if needed.
This position is super useful for landscape, architecture, long exposures, videography, or studio photography setups.
4 Legged Thing
How can a tripod have 4 legs? Well, it’s actually a centre column used as a leg – so call it whatever you like – because it’s stronger than you think.
All the centre columns on our tripods can be set-up to be screwed into the base of the AirHed (once the AirHed and Tri-mount are attached to the canopy) By extending the inverted centre column to make contact with the ground, it provides an extra point of support for your tripod with a low setup.
This position is great for low-angle photography, macro photography or astrophotography.
See how this is done in our handy video below!
Monopod Setups
Almost all of our current tripods have (at least) one detachable leg that can be used as a monopod, boom arm, microphone stand or general accessory support.
You’ll also be able to join the detachable leg to the centre column section to create an even taller monopod which works great for those ‘above the crowd’ shots.
This setup is useful for event photography, street photography, wildlife photography, supporting longer lenses, or shooting in tight/crowded positions.
Table-Top / Desk-Top Tripod
If you’re lucky enough to own one of our Punks 2.0, Pro Range 2.0 or Legends tripods then you’ll have 3 x detachable leg sections to use for the Monopod Setup. This enables a little extra bonus feature – with all the legs removed you’ll be left with the tripod canopy. Attach some footwear to the tripod canopy and voila – you have a whole new tripod!
A small table-top tripod or desk-top tripod can work wonders if you’re lacking in space for a full tripod setup, or just don’t need the full height. Whether you’re working from home, performing live feeds for social media, gaming, or just love vlogging then this is the ideal position for you.
Life begins at 80º
You might want to stretch off before this one. Have you even spread your legs to 80 degrees? Well, if you’re a tripod then it’s an easy one and an ideal position if you have a little more ground space for the legs while needing a low-angle shot.
Spreading all three legs out to the 80-degree position gives a wide and stable platform for use with the centre column removed or extended depending on the height required.
This position is popular for sports photography, wildlife photography, or when you’re just trying to capture an image from a new perspective.
This is only a taste of the variety of positions put into regular use by photographers, and is nowhere near exhaustive. Are there regular positions that you use that we haven’t included? Isn’t it handy when your kit is capable of so much more than just a regular tripod.
After all, who doesn’t want a tripod capable of more positions that a yoga instructor?
