At the heart of the system, you'll find James and Jason: two premium carbon fibre tripods. Swap the legs and you swap the tripod - travel kit for a mountain trail, load-bearing kit for a 600mm lens, all built around two modular canopies.
James and Jason are made from premium 3K weave carbon fibre and aerospace-grade magnesium alloy, engineered for photographers who need real stability and real versatility, and don't want to carry six tripods to get there.
Why Another Tripod?
Most photographers don't own one tripod. They own three or four, and each one exists to cover for what the others can't do. And it’s always a compromise.
The travel tripod folds small but doesn't like heavier gear. The big one holds rock steady but isn't coming on a five-mile hike. A video shoot means a different head, a different plate, sometimes a different tripod altogether, and a wildlife weekend usually means digging out a tripod that can support longer lenses.
Every one of those tripods is a good product on its own. Owning all of them is the compromise, to your wallet and your sciatica.
We asked a simpler question: what if the tripod itself could change, instead of you having to own a different one for every job?
Meet the Modular Tactical Tripod System
James and Jason aren't two tripods. They're one platform - two canopies and three sets of interchangeable legs with three sets of interchangeable footwear - so the tripod you own can change shape as your photography does.
Pick the canopy that matches how you shoot: James for compact carry, Jason for ultimate stability. Pick the leg set that matches what you're doing today: five-section legs that disappear into a backpack, four-section legs for extra rigidity, three-section legs for maximum stiffness when the conditions or terrain demand everything. Change your mind next month, and you change the legs, not the tripod.
Two Canopies
Every photographer shoots differently, so instead of building one tripod to compromise for everyone, we built two.
James
James is the one you forget you're carrying. It's built for photographers who weigh every gram in their bag but won't accept a wobbly shot to save it - hiking, travel, landscapes, the days when the walk to the location is half the job. The canopy is slim enough that the folded tripod fits into a backpack's water bottle pocket, and premium 3K weave carbon fibre tubing, aerospace-grade magnesium alloy and oversized leg locks keep it rigid well beyond what its size suggests.
Jason
Jason takes the same engineering and builds outward from it. The larger canopy is sized for bigger ball heads and video heads, so it holds its footing under a long telephoto lens or a cinema rig the way James was never meant to. Wildlife photographers and videographers get the same materials, the same locks, the same attention to detail - just scaled for the weight they're actually supporting.
Built Around You
Say you already own James, and a trip comes up where the shot calls for more stability than travel legs can give. Swap to the four-section set and you're covered - same canopy, same head, no second tripod bought and left in a cupboard.
Or you own Jason, and next month's job is a flight with a strict carry-on limit. Borrow James's five-section travel legs. They mount the same way, they're built to the same standard, and for that trip you're carrying a different tripod without having bought one.
That's the point of the platform: your photography changes from one week to the next, and now the kit can keep up without you having to keep buying it.
Materials
None of this works if the materials can't back it up.
James and Jason are built from premium 3K weave carbon fibre for stiffness without the weight penalty, and aerospace-grade magnesium alloy for the canopy, chosen because it is both lightweight and robust. The leg locks are oversized on purpose, for leverage and grip when your hands are cold or wet. Our Helical Strake design channels airflow downwards creating a ground effect that roots your tripod and dampens unwanted vibrations, so performance holds up once conditions turn against you, and every fixing is stainless steel for corrosion resistance. Every leg comes apart for cleaning, because a tripod that can't be serviced is a tripod with a shelf life.
The Details That Take Longer to Notice
Some of what makes James and Jason good won't show up on a spec sheet. Here are some of the little details that make all the difference.
Trigger-Pull Leg-Angle Adjustment - Independently Adjustable
The Trigger-Pull mechanism sets each leg's angle independently in one motion, which matters more than it sounds like it should. Easy-to-use in any conditions, even when wearing gloves.
Ultra Low-Level Shooting
Each of the tripods feature our three optimal leg angles 23˚, 55˚, and 80˚ allowing you to create content from a variety of different levels. The 80˚ angle allows you to get right down to ground level - perfect for epic landscapes or macros of bugs and plants.
Convert To A Monopod, or Three!
Both tripods have three detachable legs that can convert to a monopod when you need to move fast, or a lighting or sound boom when you need extra versatility for video. Each leg has dual female 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads at the base for attaching lights or microphones, and a male 3/8"-16 thread at the wide end for attaching larger accessories and heads.
Multiple Accessory Mounting Points
James and Jason tripods each have a standard 3/8"-16 screw mount suitable for attaching all standard tripod heads, like the AirHed Orbit and other 3LT heads. Each of the tripod canopies also include an additional 3/8"-16 thread with 1/4"-20 adapter for attaching accessory arms for lights or mics.
Integrated QD socket
Both tripods also feature an integrated QD socket giving you a proper place to store your AXIS camera strap instead of it dangling round your neck.
User Serviceable Construction
At 3 Legged Thing, we design tripods to last, and that includes making them easy to service. We know you like to stand them in the sea, on muddy riverbanks, and on sandy beaches, so we ensure that the legs can be easily dismantled and reassembled for cleaning.
The AirHed Orbit
Any standard tripod head works with James and Jason, thanks to the universal 3/8"-16 and 1/4"-20 threads. But we wanted a head that felt like it was built for this system specifically — so we created the AirHed Orbit.
Available in 55mm and 72mm, Orbit is a single-hand-controlled levelling head designed for quick, intuitive positioning. The 55mm suits James’ compact canopy, while the larger 72mm complements Jason’s bigger canopy.
Both sizes are available as optional add-ons once you’ve chosen your Kickstarter pledge.
