Description

To use Ultra Plates as a mount for long lenses, 3 Legged Thing has created the Thingy. Made from aerospace-grade magnesium alloy, the Thingy attaches to the Ultra Plate, and then fixes to the base of your camera. This creates a secure and stable platform for both lens and camera to attach to your tripod, and prevents any unwanted twisting. Thingy can be positioned to support a variety of lens and camera combinations, where the lens has a lens foot.

That is one great Thingy. This camera support, combined with the 200mm Ultra Plate in copper gives me all the assurance I need that my recent investment in a 600mm telephoto lens will be well stabilized. Absolutely no unwanted twisting from the plate because the platform created by the Thingy from body to lens is solid. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this product.

It does what I want it to do—provide a stable platform for my very large and heavy 500mm f/4.5 lens. I wanted one with copper accents, but that wasn’t available. Perhaps, 3 Legged Thing can offer replacement parts so we may customize our gear? Like all of their gear, it is very well made, the fit and finish are spot-on, and it's a joy to use.

This Thingy is awesome! Definitely makes the camera feel sturdy when paired with the Ultra plate. Works well with my Winston 2.0. Another useful part of my kit from 3 Legged Thing.

It took a bit to figure out how exactly to get it to fit but once it was lined up properly it's solid as a rock, looking forward to long exposure work finally!

Solid as a rock

As a sports photographer I've been struggling to keep from 'twisting' my long lens whilst it's on top of a monopod. Especially when I'm tracking action up and down and side to side on the pitch. There have been countless times that I've found that the release plate has become loose, no matter how much I had tightened it. This results in the camera moving independently to the tripod/monopod head and not being securely fixed. Many times I've lost a shot whilst tightening the release plate back onto the lens. When the lens and camera body are attached via the Thingy, it's going nowhere.
I bought the 200mm plate to go with it. This was the wrong choice I think, as it extends far beyond the length of the foot of both my 600mm and 800mm lenses and this may (although I haven't had a chance to test this yet) restrict me from manually focussing the lens if I was wearing gloves. I'll purchase a shorter plate for my purposes, but I'm keeping the longer plate for when working in the studio or weddings, when it will come in useful using it in the way it is originally intended.
I've tried the Thingy attached to the camera with an already attached 3LT L-Bracket. This set up does feel a bit over the top, and did need me to swap out and reverse the base of the Thingy to get it aligned, but I like to keep the L-Bracket on, especially with sports photography, because of the additional protection for the camera.
Overall I am very impressed with this product and would recommend it.
As an aside, my monopod was recently hit by the ball, the 3LT foot stabilizer was damaged. I contacted them and without charge they sent me a new part, easy to replace. Any company that cares about its customers like this will always get my business - it's just a shame I'm running out of things to buy.

The Thingy is the best thingy you can buy

Took advantage of the Kickstarter campaign to purchase the 200mm plate and the Thingy. I had recently suffered from my Sigma 150-600mm lens feeling like it was pulling my camera when supported on a monopod. As if by magic the Thingy came up in the kickstarter so thought I would give it a go. Didn't know what to expect from the kickstarter or the product although 3 legged thing always provided quality products. When it arrived it was a lot smaller than I thought it would be and feared the worst. How wrong could I be!!!! Attached the plate, the Thingy, Sigma lens and camera to my monopod via the Airhed Pro and my word it was sooooo sturdy. It was like a vice like clamp, this was going nowhere. An excellent engineered product yet again from this company!! Purchase when you can, you will not be disappointed
