Meet James and Jason, two premium carbon fibre tripods with interchangeable legs and canopies, built to adapt to different shoots, setups, and adventures
Stagsden, Bedfordshire, UK — 9 September 2026 — British tripod manufacturer 3 Legged Thing has launched its Modular Tactical Tripod System on Kickstarter, introducing James and Jason: two premium carbon fibre tripods designed to reconfigure for the job at hand.
Most photographers don't own one tripod — they own several, because no single tripod does everything well. A compact travel tripod packs light but won't always give the rigidity or height a shoot demands. A heavy-duty tripod holds rock solid but isn't much fun to carry five miles up a mountain. So, 3 Legged Thing asked a simple question: what if the tripod itself could change?
Enter James and Jason. Two canopies, three sets of interchangeable carbon fibre legs, and every leg set built to fit both canopies. Photographers and videographers can pick the setup that works for them, then swap things around when the next shoot calls for something different.
James is the smaller of the two: a compact canopy and a slim folded profile built for travel, hiking, and landscapes, for days when the walk to the location is half the job. Jason is the bigger sibling, with a larger canopy built to comfortably carry serious ball heads and video heads, long lenses, and heavier setups — built for wildlife and video work.
Both James and Jason pair with 3, 4, or 5-section leg sets. The 5-section legs pack down smallest for travel, the 4-section legs add rigidity and create the perfect all-round tripod, and the 3-section legs deliver maximum stiffness when conditions, terrain, or kit demand it. Change the legs, change the canopy, change the tripod.
Underneath the modularity is 3 Legged Thing’s acclaimed British engineering: premium 3K weave carbon fibre and aerospace-grade magnesium alloy, oversized leg locks, Trigger-Pull leg-angle adjustment, three detachable legs, multiple accessory mounting points, integrated QD sockets, and fully user-serviceable construction.
“I first had the idea to create a system with modular, swappable components when I designed our Pro & Legends Ranges in 2015, the first tripods in the world with 3 detachable legs,” commented 3 Legged Thing Founder, Danny Lenihan, “but we were still so new back then, and I had no idea how to implement a modular system. The feedback from those that have tested it has been phenomenal, in both photography, videography and shooting sports. That we are here, and bringing it to market a decade later is so exciting, and I cannot wait for the wider public to get their hands on this incredible system.”
Launching alongside James and Jason is the AirHed Orbit, a new single-hand levelling head designed to make positioning and levelling fast and intuitive. Available in 55mm and 72mm versions to complement James and Jason respectively, Orbit is available as an optional Kickstarter add-on.
Backers can also choose from a range of other optional add-ons, including additional canopies and leg sets, interchangeable tripod footwear, QD accessories, and a selection of other 3 Legged Thing tripod heads.
