5 Brilliant Things You Can Do With An L-Bracket

Learn what you can do with an L-bracket.

If you're not familiar with the benefits an L-bracket can bring to your photography, here are a few things to consider. A camera L-bracket can be used for many genres of photography, so whether you're into landscapes, studio and portrait work, cityscapes, architecture, astrophotography, still-life, fine-art, or macro, an L-bracket can help you create better photographs when using a tripod.

Here are 5* things you can do with an L-bracket:

1. Keep the camera's weight above the centre of gravity.

When using a tripod, the most stable place for your camera to be is at the centre of gravity. Luckily ours, is bang in the middle above the centre canopy!

When it comes to switching between landscape and portrait orientation, most people will use the notch in the tripod head. This then throws the weight of the camera over to one side and can make the tripod unbalanced. With an L-Bracket fitted, instead of placing the camera in the tripod head notch, you would simply flip the camera onto its side on top of the tripod keeping everything centred. When using heavier cameras and/or lenses, you want everything to be as balanced as possible and this simple product would help.

2. Maintain focal plane and level horizon.

One of the most important reasons for using an L-bracket for photography or videography is to enable easy switching between landscape and portrait orientations. At the same time, using the L-bracket enables you to maintain the same focal plane and a level horizon, so you just re-frame the subject in the other orientation.

3. Attach camera straps to them

Our camera L-brackets include strap attachment points on both the vertical aspect and base. This is helpful to enable you to attach a hand strap via the camera strap lug to the base of the L-bracket, or a neck strap to the vertical aspect*, if it's easier to access than the camera strap lug.

*excludes Ellie L-brackets where we recommend connecting the strap to the camera instead of the vertical aspect.

4. Attach accessory arms for lights or monitors

There will be times when you'll want to add extra accessories to your set-up – for example adding lights, or a monitor if you're filming video. Each of our L-brackets include at least one ¼â€-20 screw thread (and in most cases, two) where you can attach an arm so you can mount accessories alongside your camera.

5. Protect your camera

Whilst not fully enclosed, two sides of your camera will be more protected when you add an L-bracket, like a little metal jacket! – Little Metal Jacket could be the name of a rock band... Who wants to start the band up? We can contribute nothing musically to the band, but will be your biggest fans!

*Other possible uses include Doorstop, Paperweight, and Boomerang (although it's unlikely to come back).
